Cook School ( From 2020 )
Following the opening of the new building Highgate Newtown Community Centre weekend cook School will teach healthy eating and cooking.
12 Reasons Every Child should Learn to Cook
1.An Important Life Skill
Those of us who learned basic cooking skills at a young age have much to be grateful for. Many people don’t feel confident in the kitchen, and really struggle to consistently cook healthy meals for themselves and their families because of it.
2. Build Relationships
In addition to helping parents to spend time with their children, cooking together fosters cooperation and communication among siblings. It’s startling how beautifully brothers and sisters will work together when a batch of cookies are at stake!
3. Appreciate Wholesome Food
Preparing foods from scratch allows children to see for themselves the difference between fresh foods and processed ones. As you cook, talk about the health benefits of fresh, wholesome food, produced and prepared the way it was meant to be.
4. Reduce ‘Picky Eating’
Even the pickiest eaters will come around to trying new foods if they were involved in cooking them. If you’ve got a picky eater in the family bring them into the kitchen. Be patient – even if it doesn’t work right away, it will eventually!
5. Develop Motor Skills
Care and dexterity is required to properly prepare food. A kitchen is not risk-free and understanding how to manipulate utensils and to prepare and cook food appropriately helps develop abilities useful in many areas of life.
6. Learning from instruction and example
What child couldn’t use a little more practice in this area? Children are motivated to get it right because if they don’t they may taste the difference when they eat the results of their efforts!
8. Reading Practice
Children learn to read a recipe, and start preparing it with very little assistance. This gives a real sense of accomplishment. At this stage a parent or carers job become much easier.
8. Maths Practice
Cooking involves lots of maths. From simple counting (three tablespoons), to judging quantities by comparison (more than or less than), to dealing with fractions (1/2 cup). The list goes on.
9. A Creative Outlet
Kids love getting to help decide what’s for dinner, what goes in the fruit salad, or just about any other part of the meal. Older kids can express their creativity in recipe development and food presentation. There is a real pleasure in watching a child carefully and artfully design their lunch plate as they might an art project.
10. Positive Affirmation
We all know kids love being praised for their accomplishments. Teaching kids to cook provides plenty of opportunities to encourage and applaud their efforts in the kitchen building their self-confidence and self-worth.
11. Service to Others
Whether it’s making a snack for a sibling, or helping cook and deliver dinner for a friend in need, it’s important for children to see food as a means of showing loving care for others.
12. Supporting you
Does this one really need explanation? As your kids become old enough to help it can really reduce your workload. The more they are supported in developing life skills the better able they become to play their role in the household, to support you and others and to make a real difference to all your lives.
